After a year spent trying to prevent a catastropic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson--a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends. But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: The magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters--the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millenia--only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name...the Bermuda Triangle. Now Percy and his friends--Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson--must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family--one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke. In this dynamic sequel to The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson is sent on yet another whirling adventure across the world of Greek mythology. Percy discovers in the first audio book that he is not just an average teenage boy, but is actually a demigod and the lost son of the great Poseidon. He is introduced to this new world of myth and legend, and expected to step in as the demigod that he is. Here, in The Sea of Monsters, we find our hero gaining confidence and reputation as he continues to mature in this strange realm.

This sequel presents Percy with two major challenges. First, his friend Grover (a Satyr) has been taken captive by a Cyclops and is in desperate need of saving. Second, Thalia (a demigod previously transformed into a pine tree) is dying and needs the long-lost Golden Fleece in order to be revived. Percy realizes, through a series of dreams, that Grover may have found the Golden Fleece. So, along with his fellow demigod friends Tyson and Annabeth, Jackson sets out to rescue Grover and recover the Fleece from the Sea of Monsters, the treacherous place where Grover is trapped. Along the way, the company encounters a number of unsavory characters, old and new, and fall into dangers fitting for the mythos from which this epic tale is derived.
